| NEWS FROM THE EZRA BESSAROTH YOUTH COMMITTEE SHABBAT PROGRAM BEGINS THIS WEEK! Please bring the kids and join us this Shabbat as we offer the first of our weekly Shabbat Youth programs. Natalie Sikavi has designed a dynamic program and worked with the counselors to prepare a fun and educational experience for babies through 5th grade. It is with great joy that we welcome the youth of our community back into the Hemmat Youth Center for our Shabbat programming. Infants-2nd grade program: will be downstairs in the Hemmat Youth Center. Grades 3-5: will meet in the Midrash upstairs. There are colorful signs up welcoming each age group to their room. Snacks of cheese and crackers, apples and cookies and water will be served. Please tell your child's counselor if they have any allergies or food restrictions, and feel welcome to send a snack along that would better suit your child if the above food won't work for her/him. The infant-2 year old room has cubbies in it so that parents are welcome to leave a diaper bag there with their kid's supplies from week to week. The goal of these programs is to provide a fun atmosphere where children will be introduced to the Minhagim of our Kehila and Tefilah, as well as the weekly Perasha. A SPECIAL NOTE FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN IN GRADES 3-5 If your child is in grades 3-5, their program uses a ticket system--whereby they earn numbered tickets for participation, correct answers to Perasha (weekly Torah portion) trivia questions, leadership and effort. They will be returning to the main sanctuary for Mussaf. They are welcome to sit as a group with their counselors or with you. If you have a preference, please let them know ahead of time. They also earn tickets for their attendance at Mussaf in the main sanctuary and will receive a special ticket at the end of Mussaf if they have stayed the whole time. It is this single ticket which allows them to participate in the raffle, and the number of tickets they have earned during the whole program which offers them the most chances to win a prize--this will be explained to the kids but we want parents to know about this rule ahead of time so that you can help prepare your kids to stay in the main sanctuary for Mussaf. The raffle will be held for them immediately after Adon Olam in the main sanctuary. The goal of this program is to further each child's knowledge of the weekly Perasha, Tefilah, and Minhagim of our Kehila, and to have them participate with their Kahl. KIDS KIDDUSH TABLE A kids Kiddush table will be set up for all of the children to enjoy in the foyer near the social hall doors. We would love to have parent volunteers to help set-up the table each week. If you are available to help for a Shabbat, please email me at jlo5505@comcast.net PARENT VOLUNTEERS WANTED! I am actively seeking other parents to help out on the Youth Committee. It will require minimal time--less than two hours per month, and is set-up to run through June. This committee will be working to support the youth Shabbat program and to implement one family program in May. In June members will participate in a process of evaluation to help shape the future of the youth program. If you are interested, please email me. COMING SOON... The youth program will be providing games and fun at the Purim Bazaar this year, and running an EB Family Style Sunday Program in May--which includes hot breakfast and learning and activities for the whole family. Depending on interest and participation we may start to introduce some weekend programs for children in the spring. It is my sincere hope that together we can provide a place for our children to be nurtured by their community and exposed to the ways of their parents and grandparents. Quien hijo cr-a, oro hila--to rear a child is to spin gold. My thanks and best to all, Jodilyn Owen, Youth Committee Chairperson jlo5505@comcast.net |

All children are welcome to the Children’s Shabbat Kiddush Table, which will be set-up weekly with a great spread meant just for the kids! GET A JUMP START ON SPRING CLEANING! The Youth Committee asks your help in restocking our classrooms with toys and books in good or great condition! Please visit the boxes and bins in your basement and garage for children’s toys, books, and furniture. We ask please that they be in clean, working condition. You can bring them to Ezra Bessaroth and ask Jennifer in the office to show you where to put them. We thank you in advance for your help! Seniors or those who would like to donate but need help getting the items to the Kehila, please call Jennifer in the office at 206.722.5500 and we will be in contact with you. Monetary contributions earmarked for this cause are also welcome. Please send them to Ezra Bessaroth, 5217 South Brandon Street, Seattle, WA 98118 in care of the EB Youth Program. YOUTH COMMITTEE SEEKS VOLUNTEERS Jodilyn Owen is the new chair of the Ezra Bessaroth youth committee and she will work together with that committee to help develop and strengthen the youth program. The youth committee will also be working with the Rabbi and Hazzan to offer monthly Sunday morning hot breakfasts for families. These mornings will begin with Shahrit led by our youth and include programs for everyone in the family — from babysitting to classes for youth and moms and dads, grandparenting classes and cooking lessons for kids as they help prepare the breakfasts for their families in the EB kitchen with President Jack Deleon. Watch for mommy-and-me and parent education programs for parents of children ages 0- 3 as well. The youth committee will, se kyere el Dio, continue to strengthen over the remainder of the school year, with the goal of offering a more comprehensive program including weekday and Sunday activities for the youth starting in the fall of 2006. As you can imagine, there are plenty of opportunities for adult volunteers for the Shabbat and family programs that are starting this February. If you would like to volunteer your services for anything from helping to set up the kids Kiddush table or shopping for supplies, to helping set up the classrooms downstairs prior to the program’s start-date, or even participating on the youth committee or teaching a Sunday morning class, please email Jodilyn at jlo5505@comcast.net or call 206.261.2312. Pre-Register your 3 year old - 5th Graders for the Shabbat Program Children who are pre-registered for the first Shabbat program will arrive to find a Siddur in their classroom with their name in it which will be left in the classroom especially for their use each Shabbat! Additionally, it helps our counselors know who they are planning to see there and our shoppers purchase the right amount of supplies! Please email Natalie at ebyouth@ezrabessaroth.net or leave a message with Jennifer in the EB office at 206.722.5500. |
